WEDNESDAY MARCH 13, 2019

 

9:00-10:30 Grow Your Business Installing Permeable Pavers & Selecting the Right Pavers for the Project

Speaker: Kevin Earley 

Kevin Earley Director of Commercial Belgard Pavers Oldcastle Architectural, Inc. Mr. Earley is a LEED Green Associate and licensed Professional Geologist with a M.S. in Engineering Geology from Drexel University. He is one of the contributing Principal Authors of the ASCE’s Permeable Pavement Manual and is past Chairman of the Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute’s Technical Committee. He currently chairs the Program Committee for the ICPI’s Foundation for Research and Education and is a member of three ASCE Standards Committees related to interlocking concrete pavement design. He is also a voting member of ASTM C-15, Manufactured Masonry Units, and has participated in the development of paver manufacturing standards and permeable paver infiltration test methods. He has over 25 years’ experience related to environmental solutions using concrete products, and regularly speaks to specifiers and contractors on stormwater topics and concrete industry developments.

Grow Your Business Installing Permeable Pavers
The use of Permeable Interlocking Concrete Pavement (PICP) as solution for rainwater management continues to gain acceptance across the country.  This presentation will describe how PICP systems are designed, constructed, and maintained.  An industry update on the latest maintenance research will be provided along with information about municipal acceptance in New England.  Tips on promoting all of the environmental benefits of PICP will be presented, along with a review of incentive programs available in New England.

Selecting the Right Paver for the Project
Hardscaping professionals today have a large selection of paving materials and sizes to offer their customers to provide unique and attractive paving solutions. Concrete planks, slabs, and porcelain materials have become popular in recent years. Understanding the limitations of different materials and shapes is important when recommending a pavement solution.  This presentation will describe the science behind designing pavements for long-term performance. A review of terms like flexural strength, aspect ratio, and Equivalent Single Axle Load will be explained along with an introduction to basic pavement design concepts will be reviewed.  Selection of pavers for walkway surface when considering pedestrian safety will be discussed, including issues related to ADA, high heels and permeable pavers, wheelchair vibration, and deicing chemicals. 

11:00-12:30 The R.E.A.P Program (Respond-Educate-Advertise-Perform)

Speaker: Greg Ambrose

Greg Ambrose founded Fairlawn Consulting in 2007 to enhance the overall educational process for hardscape contractors. He is dedicated to the education of hardscape contractors in all segments of business and installation. He will share this through specializing in hands-on seminars and sharing his various real-life experiences through one-on-one consultation, as well as speaking to groups, and conducting industry sponsored certifications. Most recently Greg has worked as a consultant on the largest historical road renovation in Panama City, Panama Central America, and on the largest ICP installation at the Moin Container Port in Moin, Cost Rica. He has also shared his knowledge at such events as Hardscape North America in Louisville KY, iLandcape in Chicago IL, the CENTs Show in Columbus OH, and Green n Growin’ in Greensboro, NC. Greg is an ICPI Level One Contractor and Instructor who has taught more than 150 classes in over 27states and Canada. Since 1998 he has certified over 3,700 students. He is also Certified as both a Contractor and an Instructor for the ICPI Commercial Technicians and PICP Technicians classes as well as the Advanced Residential Technicians classes. He has Certificates from The NCMA and the School for Advanced Segmental Paving and is the lead instructor for the school. Over the past 3 years Greg has instructed more than twice as many ICPI classes as any other instructor! He has worked in various roles in the concrete paver industry since 1984. Prior to starting Fairlawn Consulting, Greg spent seven years as Vice-President for a Cleveland-based hardscape company specializing in high-end residential and commercial applications where his company successfully completed the largest historical brick road renovation in North America at the time. Greg currently runs United Hardscape, LLC located in Akron, OH. Greg appeared on 4 episodes of Discovery Channel’s Hometime, as well as having offered how-to advice for consumers and contractors on radio. Greg has also enjoyed multiple speaking engagements on all aspects of hardscape installation such as; Commercial Installations, Mechanical Installations, How to Sell In-Home, How to Prequalify Your Customers, Specialty Hardscape Installations, and Bidding and Estimating. Class Description:
A proper base is essential to a great installation. Nowhere is this more important than a Raised Patio application. In this presentation, we have combined Advanced Base Installation along with Raised Patio Construction. This class will cover the importance of proper base installation. We will discuss the proper material, proper placement, and proper compaction. We will also look at alternative base materials and their uses. We will discuss basic engineering and how that applies to our everyday installation methods for a proper base. We will also discuss raised patio construction. The discussion will include how to plan out your raised application for maximum efficiency, and how to manage your materials. All of the above will ultimately lead to better quality, better productivity, and more profit.

3:30-5:00 Expanding Your Porcelain Portfolio within Hardscape Design

Speaker: Dave Huber 

David Huber has 30+ years of experience in the Landscape/Hardscape business. He graduated from SUNY Cobleskill in 1989 with a degree in in horticulture/landscape development.  He has been a professional Landscape/Hardscape Designer, Design consultant and Landscape/Hardscape Salesperson with multiple Landscape Design/Build companies in NY and NJ as well as having 12 years’ experience owning and operating his own Landscape Design/Build business on Long Island. He has been a concrete paver territory rep in NJ for both Cambridge and Nicolock and has also worked with a plant broker in the Northeast selling landscape plants to nurseries and garden centers. He started working with Porcelain pavers as a design consultant about 3 years ago, selling porcelain as an exterior paving option to homeowners and now is currently the Northeast Hardscape Territory Representative for Mirage Porcelain Tile, an Italian tile manufacturer.

Class Description:
We will examine the benefits of offering porcelain as an alternative hardscape paving and veneer solution to stone, brick, wood or concrete.  We will look at how to to increase sales numbers as well as improve the quality of the designers portfolio by offering porcelain to their clients.  We will discuss how porcelain is made, explore different installation methods as well as talk about how to design and sell porcelain to homeowners.

8:15-9:15 The OSHA New Crystalline Silica regulation that will effect your business

Speaker: Joe Raboine 


Joe Raboine is Belgard’s National Design and Training Specialist. In his current role, Joe works with Belgard Design Studio to help guide, conceptualize, and implement outdoor living designs, concepts and renderings for dealers and contractors across the country. Belgard Design Studio is a resource to create customizable, 3D designs for Belgard Authorized Contractors and design professionals. He also oversees the design process behind trade show buildouts, conducts field training and performs hands-on product demonstrations. Joe strives to promote the idea that outdoor living is not only a good investment for homeowners, but can also fundamentally change lives for the better by bringing people together. Joe started his career as a contractor over 25 years ago. He is credited with inventing the pre-fabricated components of the Elements Collection under his company, Harmony Outdoor Living, Inc., which was acquired by Belgard® under Oldcastle® in 2013. Oldcastle also awarded Joe with an Innovation Award, awarded to a member within the company each year, for developing the concept behind the Belgard Design Studio. Joe grew up in Wisconsin and currently resides in Atlanta, Ga. with his wife and five children. He loves spending time outdoors, hiking, kayaking, and enjoying nature with his family.

Joe will present the new OSHA silica dust regulations.   We’d discuss the health implications of the dust, and the proper methods for cutting.  We will also discuss the following items related to this new regulation:

Bob Salvas is a marketing consultant with over 30 years of experience in his field. He is the owner of Bob Salvas Consulting and the coordinator of 4th Monday Networking, a monthly small business networking event that takes place in North Attleboro MA. Bob has been a certified SCORE counselor and SCORE seminar presenter for the last five years. Bob has presented on a wide variety of marketing topics to many audiences at local, regional and national events.
